SWEDISH RED BULL YOUTH AMERICA'S CUP TEAM ANNOUNCED
Artemis Racing and KSSS have announced the team that will represent Sweden at the 2017 Red Bull Youth America's Cup (June 13-23, 2017).
The regatta is scheduled to take place during the week between the two weekends of the 35th America’s Cup Match in Bermuda; the youth teams will be racing in the challenging one-design AC45F foiling catamarans used in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series.
Artemis Racing and KSSS held an open application process earlier this year, with the top 25 applicants, both boys and girls, invited to take part in a grueling four day selection event on the island of Grötö, in Gothenburg's archipelago.
To sail the AC45F requires tremendous physical strength, and the trialists were put through their paces both on the water, racing on M32 catamarans, as well as in the gym, completing a number of physical tests.
Rasmus Rosengren, was quick to impress and has been given the prestigious job of steering the Swedish boat next summer.
“Ever since I was part of the Artemis Racing internship programme in San Francisco I’ve dreamt of racing in the America’s Cup. Having this opportunity in the Red Bull team is a fantastic stepping stone, and I’m really excited about the challenge ahead”, said Rasmus.
“I have been sailing the Nacra 17, the Olympic class catamaran, as crew for Ida Svensson, who was also one of the athletes trialing for the helmsman position. We finished in the top 20 at the World Championships, just missing out on a place at the Olympics”, continued Rasmus.
The Swedish youth team will be coached by Olympic champion and Artemis Racing tactician, Fredrik Lööf, alongside KSSS Sporting Director, Bjorn Johansson.
"Choosing which of the 25 very talented young people would make the team was one of the hardest things I have experienced. At the beginning we planned to pick a squad of eight sailors, but because the quality was so high, we decided to increase the group to nine”, says Fredrik Lööf.
Several of the sailors who competed in the 2013 Red Bull Youth America's Cup in San Francisco are now racing with current America's Cup teams. Andreas Axelsson, who was part of the Swedish youth team, is now part of the Artemis Racing crew. New Zealander Peter Burling, helmsman of the winning Red Bull Youth America’s Cup team in 2013, is now the helmsman on board Emirates Team New Zealand. The hope is that several of this new Swedish youth team will race for Artemis Racing in future America's Cups.
Artemis Racing Youth will compete in the M32 Series event in Stockholm this week, under the name of ‘Artemis Youth Racing’, and will train on the boat through the winter before heading to Bermuda next spring. Members of the team will also be invited to sail with Gunvor Sailing, in the GC32 European circuit, gaining valuable experience in foiling catamarans.
The team is being supported by Artemis Racing, KSSS, Aston Harald, Pelle P and eWork Group; and hopes to secure the support of additional partners before the racing next summer.
